In honour of the Telemachos Kanthos exhibition in Finland, soprano Eleni Kanthou and guitarist Eugenia Kanthou, daughters of the painter, preformed a concert to an audience of distinguished guests on 18 June 2008, organized by the Embassy of Cyprus. The concert, titled Aphrodite Inspires…Smiles and Tears of Love was a guitar and voice duo including an impressive variety of beautiful Cypriot and Greek folk songs. Eleni and Eugenia Kanthou both have a notable background in the field of music and have studied at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst (now the University of Music and Performing Arts) in Vienna. Eleni Kanthou, Soprano, completed her Masters Degree in theater and musicology at the Vienna University in 1988 and then took up engagements at the Wiener Kammeroper, the Theater an der Wien, the opera of Sankt Pölten, and the National Opera in Athens. She has sang at the International Youth Festival in Bayreuth, the Hellbrunn Festival in Salzburg, the Carinthischer Sommer, the Bratislava Guitar Festival, the Thessaloniki Festival, the Wiener Festwochen and the Wiener Musiksommer to name a few. Author of the books Maria Callas, die Interpretin (Germany, 1995, Greek Translation 1997), and Telemachos Kanthos –the Portrait of a Creator, and founder and director of the vocal ensemble Camerata Cypria, Eleni also writes the program notes and translates the opera libretto into Greek for the Pafos Aphrodite Festival. Additionally she has preformed extensively in oratorio and sacred music and was a soloist in a recording for Mozarts Spatzenmesse for Philips. Eugenia Kanthou, Guitarist, has taken part as a soloist and chamber musician in internationally renowned festivals and concerts, such as the Forum Gendarmenmarkt in the Berliner Konzerthaus, the Vienna Festival and Vienna Music Summer, the Carinthian Summer and the Gitarre-Wien in Austria, the Marlboro Music Festival in the U.S.A., the Tibor Varga Festival in Sion, Switzerland and the Gotland Chamber in Sweden. She has preformed with the American tenor Jon Humphrey, the violinist Ulf Wallin, the guitarists Konrad Ragossnig, Göran Söllscher and several others. Eugenia has additionally cooperated as a soloist with orchestras in Austria, Sweden and Cyprus and has been a prize-winner at the “Fernando Sor” International Guitar Competition in Rome. Furthermore she has lectured guitar and chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna as well as edited guitar music for Universal Edition and Doblinger. Since 1999 she has been a guest professor at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. Eleni and Eugenia Kanthou founded the duet Guitar & Voice in 1985 and have since performed together in several concerts, radio recordings and made television appearances in numerous European countries. Additionally the sisters have released two CDs Guitar & Voice and Hommage à la Guitare with Preiser Records. |
