Cyprus in the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
The Council of the European Union has appointed on June 28 seven new members to the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), among them Dr. Stella Michaelidou-Canna from Cyprus.
Dr. Michaelidou-Canna served with distinction the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cyprus for 30 years. During her four year term of service in the Board of EFSA, Dr. Michaelidou-Canna will give emphasis to the comprehensive integration of issues related to Mediterranean conditions.
EFSA is the main scientific body of the EU for the risk assessment in food and feed, playing a crucial role at the System of Food Safety, contributing particularly to the investigation, evaluation, documentation and notification of existing and new emerging risks. The work and role of EFSA to improve food safety and especially to provide equally all European citizens with the opportunity of immediate information and coordinated management of the risks presented is greatly appreciated.
Security Council Extends Mandate of Cyprus Force until 15 December, UNFICYP
Echoing the Secretary-General’s view that a solution to the situation in Cyprus was “well within reach”, the Security Council this morning extended the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force there, known as UNFICYP, for a further six months, until 15 December 2010.
Through the adoption of resolution 1930 (2010) by a vote of 14 in favour to 1 against (Turkey), the Council also urged the Greek and Turkish Cypriot parties to fully exploit the progress made so far in negotiations by intensifying the momentum of talks, preserving an atmosphere of trust and goodwill, and putting in place confidence-building measures, such as the opening of more crossing points.
It called on both sides to continue to consult with UNFICYP on the demarcation of the buffer zone and to reach agreement on other outstanding issues, and called on the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkish forces to restore in Strovilia the military situation that existed before 30 June 2000.
In the Secretary-General’s latest report on Cyprus, he says that UNFICYP plays an essential role on the island, particularly its support of his good offices mission, and he calls for a range of confidence-building measures.
Euro-Mediterranean Trade and Partnership Fair
The launch of the Euro-Mediterranean Trade and Partnership Fair 2010 took place in Nicosia in the presence of Dr Luigi Troiani, the Secretary General of the Euro–Med Trade, Distribution and Services Initiative, an organization created in 1998 under the patronage of the European Commission and the Presidency of the European Union.
The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership & Trade Fair is an on-line business matching trade exhibition and forum, specifically designed to enable enterprises in the Euro-Med region to establish contacts for trade and investment in the wider region and to find partners for franchising, joint ventures, licensing, import-export arrangements and subcontracting, thus stimulating investment. The fair is an opportunity to discover and research opportunities currently offered by governments and municipalities throughout the region.
